By car, Hvammstangi is 190 kilometers north of Reykjavík on Route 1 and 200 kilometers west of Akureyri.

It’s best to have a rental car to explore this region, but there is bus service from Akureyri. The Strætó 57 bus (tel. 354/540-2700, www.straeto.is) departs from Akureyri and travels roughly three hours to Hvammstangi for 3,960ISK.

BLÖNDUÓS

Blönduós is a tiny town that was built around a bridge over the Blanda River (Blönduós means “mouth of the river Blanda” in Icelandic). Home to just a few shops, private homes, and guesthouses, the town is a small spot that has a few attractions. If you are traveling on the Ring Road and have some time, think about visiting the Textile Museum and the local church, which is steeped in history.
